RENO, Nev. (Monday, November 8, 2021) – Sierra Nevada Nephrology has created a multi-specialty entity to expand patient services for better care continuity and coordination between subspecialties: Sierra Nevada Specialty Care. Sierra Nevada Specialty Care will include Sierra Nevada Nephrology, an already-established provider in kidney services in northern Nevada, and now Sierra Nevada Endocrinology, a comprehensive endocrinology division led by Dr. David Howard.
Dr. David Howard is joining Sierra Nevada Nephrology along with three additional endocrinology providers, prompting an expansion of services available to clients. Dr. Howard is known for his success and innovative, evidence-driven approach, which have earned him positive accolades within the medical community. His capabilities are so wide-ranging that his addition prompted the need for added staffing and a new service line, which will fall underneath Sierra Nevada Specialty Care. Dr. Howard will serve as the principal endocrinologist serving patients in seven locations around Nevada.
“We believe Dr. Howard to be the best endocrinologist in the state and are beyond excited he’s helping us in our next evolution,” said Dr. James Sullivan, board president for Sierra Nevada Specialty Care. “His undeniable expertise in endocrinology will benefit the Nevadans who trust our team to guide them to healthier lives and gets our practice closer in our multi-specialty quest for better care coordination.”
Most recently, Dr. Howard served as the chief of the endocrine department at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine from 2018 to 2021 and was awarded Emeritus status just before joining Sierra Nevada Specialty Care. Previously he served as the director of curriculum for years one and two for the college.
“I share the same vision as the Sierra Nevada Specialty Care team and am honored to help this practice continue building comprehensive approaches to patient care,” said Dr. Howard. “I’m excited to lead a new team and eager to help guide our patients to better health outcomes.”
The endocrinology department will include three new endocrinology providers, Amy S. Quigley, MSN, APRN, ACNPC-AG, Tiffany Yohey, APRN, FNP, and Christine Burns, PA-C, as the practice looks to provide robust offerings to patients. They join twelve physicians and eight nurse practitioners comprising the second largest nephrology group practice in the state of Nevada. Endocrinology, the practice of understanding the endocrine system and its diseases, as well as the hormones produced from this system, is the third additional service line to be added since the practice’s initial launch in 2004, following vascular and surgery services.
Dr. Howard completed his internal medicine residency at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, then completed a research fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Colorado, Denver. In addition to his M.D., and Ph.D. in environmental toxicology from the University of Nevada, Reno, Dr. Howard holds certifications in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, as well as being certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (AMIB).
Amy S. Quigley, MSN, APRN, ACNPC-AG, an acute care nurse practitioner certified by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and her master’s as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2021. Tiffany Yohey, APRN, received her RN in 2008 and MSN in 2015 from the University of Nevada and is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Christine Burns, PA-C, earned her Bachelor of Science in physician assistant studies from School House and Henry Avenue and is NCCPA board certified.
